SUMMARY - FCC Milieu Counselor

The FCC Milieu Counselor is responsible for:

  • Maintaining a safe living space for victims of domestic violence while providing guidance and support in an effort to create a Trauma-Informed environment
  • Providing supportive counseling and crisis intervention when appropriate to help clients problem-solve and cope through various situations
  • Answering the 24-hour crisis hotline, providing crisis intervention and information and referrals
  • Providing transportation for clients
  • Providing necessary hygiene and household items
  • Completing client intakes and discharges, safety planning, and shelter orientations.

Compensation: Starting salary for this position is approximately $12.95 /hr based on relevant experience and education plus:

  • Shift differential of 5% for 2nd shift and 10% for 3rd shift

REQUIREMENTS - Family Crisis Center Milieu Counselor

Education/Knowledge: High school degree or equivalent. Basic computer literacy skills.


  • One year experience in the social work field or a behavioral health setting
  • Knowledge and understanding of domestic violence, crisis, trauma, and mental illness
  • Experience working with victims of domestic or sexual violence preferred. 

Abilities / Skills:

  • Relate to individuals and families of varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ages, educational levels, and economic circumstances with respect and dignity
  • Excellent verbal, written, and computer skills
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with clients, collaborating agencies, and community professionals
  • Maintaining proper documentation
  • Possess reliable transportation, a valid driver's license with an F endorsement OR the ability to acquire an F endorsement on driver's license, and transport clients.


  • Exposure to biological hazards
  • Hearing of normal and soft tones as well as close eye work
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Pushing/pulling up to 150 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching
  • To ensure the safety of the clients and staff, this position requires certification in and adequate implementation of verbal and physical de-escalation techniques (Handle with Care) that include a wide range of bodily movements including but not limited to grasping, holding another person, going down on knees, running, and walking
