PRN Transitional Housing Advocate

The PRN Transitional Housing Advocate will work directly with men and women in the Family Crisis Center (FCC) Transitional Housing program. The Transitional Housing program provides on-site housing for up to 7 singles and/or families, and off-site financial and social support for 6 singles and/or families. Clients within the Transitional Housing program will receive 6-24 months of on-site and/or off-site assistance, culminating in permanent, sustainable housing. The TH Advocate will provide the necessary guidance and resources to ensure permanency for clients. The TH Advocate is the first responder to crisis situations within on-site housing. The TH Advocate will serve as a support for clients through referrals, housing advocacy, safety planning, crisis intervention, and healthy coping skills. The TH Advocate will work with the Domestic Violence Services Coordinator through supervision to discuss care coordination and needed services. Through goal planning and activities, the TH Advocate will ensure the ongoing safety of clients in transitional housing. Coordinates and works closely with FCC emergency shelter, housing developments, KCDC/Section 8, DHS, CAC, mental health providers, DV service providers across the state, and other service providers. Interfaces with community agencies and referral sources to coordinate care. Maintains file records and client information in a confidential manner. Upholds Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) confidentiality guidelines and Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) grant requirements. Maintains cleanliness and upkeep of the building. Completes all documentation in a timely manner and upholds center policy and procedures. Embraces key values of advocacy: empowerment, normalization, rehabilitation, and continuity of care. May include weekend and evening hours.

This position requires utilizing a personal dependable vehicle to conduct Center business. Maintaining a dependable vehicle and certified driver status is a condition of employment.


Education/Knowledge: Must possess a Bachelor's degree in social services, counseling, child and family studies, or related field with course work or experience in the areas of child development, cultural diversity, human development, etiology and treatment of mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse, physical and sexual abuse, suicide, and crisis intervention. Knowledge of the dynamics and cycles of domestic violence and treatment interventions for trauma highly preferred. Degree in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling preferred. Basic computer literacy skills.

Experience: 1-2 years working with adults and/or families preferred. Experience/knowledge/front line service delivery in domestic violence or other victim services is preferred. Experience in case management and trauma-informed care is preferred. Experience in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and counseling is highly preferred. Survivors of violence and those exposed to domestic violence are encouraged to apply. Bilingual preferred.

Applicants should possess the ability to relate to individuals and families of varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ages, educational levels, and economic circumstances with respect and dignity.  Excellent verbal, written, and computer skills are necessary in order to work effectively and collaboratively with clients, collaborating agencies, and community professionals, as well as maintaining proper documentation.  Clinical staff members must possess reliable transportation, the ability to acquire an F endorsement on driver's license, and transport clients.

Abilities:  Ability to effectively and ethically coordinate care for male and female victims of domestic violence. Ability to present professionally and work within a team to plan, implement, and evaluate trauma-informed care. Must have mental ability to exercise sound judgement under pressure. Ability to exercise sound judgment and effective decision-making, ability to set and demonstrate appropriate boundaries, ability to be an empathic listener, flexibility, willingness, and adaptability to working with diverse populations. Must also have the ability to communicate effectively and possess good time management and organizational skills. 

Physical: Exposure to biological hazards. Hearing of normal and soft tones as well as close eye work. Valid driver's license. Lifting up to 50 lbs. Pushing/pulling up to 150 lbs. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. May be exposed to certified service animals. Exposure to chemical products for maintaining building cleanliness. To ensure the safety of the clients and staff, this position requires certification in and adequate implementation of verbal and physical de-escalation techniques (Handle with Care) that include a wide range of bodily movements including but not limited to grasping, holding another person, going down on knees, running, and walking. Must be certified in CPR or become certified in CPR.
