SUMMARY - Juvenile Justice Diversion Counselor
The Juvenile Justice Diversion Counselor provides intensive supervision to youth who are at risk of being placed in DCS custody or at risk of further court involvement. Counselors will also act as a liaison with community agencies such as: County Schools, Department of Children's Services, and Regional County Juvenile Court. Counselors will meet with youth in their home, or at school. Counselors will help provide therapeutic services in the home. It may also be necessary for Counselors to help provide transport to help meet the therapeutic needs of their clients. Counselors will also meet with youth to perform assessments to indicate their level of need for supervision while in the program. Counselors may also be required to administer drug screens to the youth in the program.
This position requires utilizing a personal dependable vehicle to conduct Center business. Maintaining a dependable vehicle and certified driver status is a condition of employment.
REQUIREMENTS - Juvenile Justice Diversion Counselor
Education/Knowledge: A bachelor's degree in a health-related field of counseling, psychology, social work, sociology, criminal justice and experience working with individuals with mental illness and/or co-occurring diagnoses. Knowledge of Juvenile Justice System is helpful.
Experience: Must have course work and or experience in the areas of cultural diversity, human development, etiology and treatment of mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse, physical and sexual abuse, suicide, and crisis intervention. Must have experience in working with special populations including individuals with Severe and Persistent Mental Illnesses and Co-Occurring Disorders.
Applicants should possess the ability to relate to individuals and families of varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ages, educational levels, and economic circumstances with respect and dignity. Excellent verbal, written, and computer skills are necessary in order to work effectively and collaboratively with clients, collaborating agencies, and community professionals, as well as maintaining proper documentation. Clinical staff members must possess reliable transportation, the ability to acquire an F endorsement on driver's license, and transport clients.
Physical: Exposure to biological hazards. Hearing of normal and soft tones as well as close eye work. Valid driver's license. Lifting up to 50 lbs. Pushing/pulling up to 150 lbs. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. To ensure the safety of the clients and staff, this position requires certification in and adequate implementation of verbal and physical de-escalation techniques (Handle with Care) that include a wide range of bodily movements including but not limited to grasping, holding another person, going down on knees, running, and walking.
Compensation: Starting salary for this position is approximately $15.08 /hr based on relevant experience and education.
