The Peer Support Specialist serves as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, providing support to assist clients, family members and others impacted by substance use disorder and overdose reversal.

COMPENSATION: Starting salary for this position is approximately $14.23 /hr  based on relevant experience and education.

Schedule: Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the program / clients. 

Travel:  F endorsement is required.  

Equipment/Technology: Basic computer skills are required for scheduling, time keeping, email, and documentation in the electronic medical record.

QUALIFICATIONS - Peer Support Specialist

Education/License

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's preferred. 
  • A bachelor's degree in a health related field of counseling, psychology, social work, or three years' experience working with individuals with substance use disorders, or co-occurring diagnoses preferred. 
  • Has or is willing to obtain the State of Tennessee Certified Peer Recovery Specialist Training, and complete the following to be eligible for state certification:

  1. Attend the 5 day training facilitated by State Certified Trainers
  2. Gain 75 hours of work or volunteer experience in Peer Recovery services

  • Must have coursework and/or experience and understanding in the areas of cultural diversity, human development, and treatment of substance use disorder, understanding of trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, crisis intervention referral and knowledge of overdose reversal.

Experience/Knowledge

  • Must have experience as behavioral health services consumer and/or Lived recovery experience. 
  • Must be able to share your experience, strength and hope with those who have been revived from overdose in a hospital or community setting. 
  • Must practice unconditional positive regard toward persons who have experienced overdose reversal and their families and significant others.

Physical:

  • Minimal exposure to biological hazards.
  • Hearing of normal/soft tones and close eye work.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required (training provided).
  • Required to be certified in and adequately implement verbal de-escalation techniques.
  • Clinical staff may be required to get an F endorsement to transport clients as necessary.
